The rise in energy prices and its worrying consequences for production.
Reading time: < 3 minutesThe price of energy has become the worst enemy of not only citizens’ wallets but also all types of businesses that depend directly on continuous consumption to maintain their production pace
The outrageous prices of electricity, fuel, and gas that we have been dealing with for months have reached unsustainable levels, exacerbated by the consequences of the war that tragically afflicts Ukraine. The human horror and tragedy must also include the economic torment not only for the Ukrainian people but for all countries involved.
Large Spanish companies have opted to halt their activities due to the inability to cover electricity expenses with historically high levels like the €700/MWh that are currently being reached during certain time slots.
Furthermore, the energy price in our country is higher than that of other neighboring European countries, which reduces our competitiveness by nearly 3 billion euros compared to France, for example.
Energy prices threaten to suffocate businesses, self-employed individuals, and, consequently, their workers.
Recent news from the Association of Companies with High Energy Consumption (AEGE) shows that the vast majority of its members have had to suspend their activities for a few days, unable to cover the high energy consumption costs at the elevated price we are enduring during the first half of March 2022.
This practice of “production blackout” could even be repeated in the coming days if those unsustainable, historically high energy costs are reached again. Many companies have taken advantage of this time for maintenance work, but they warn of how complicated the situation will be if it persists, with hundreds of workers under their employment.
Repeatedly, all business and self-employment associations are calling on the government to take effective and swift action to offset these excessive costs to prevent production from halting, which would irreversibly affect the health and continuity of the country’s business fabric, already severely damaged by the successive crisis periods we have endured.
At Eurotransis, we are not immune to this reality, whether at the business level or as citizens, as the constant increases in electricity and fuel prices always negatively impact everyone’s economic health.
Still, we continue to work to offer quality products, providing businesses with our rollers and conveyors to meet the demands and needs of the industry.
